Plaine Products – Environmentally Friendly Personal Care Products

When I embarked on my journey to eliminate/reduce plastic a couple of years ago I quickly realized that a lot of plastic trash comes from personal care products such as shampoo bottles, soap, moisturizers, body lotion…the list goes on and on. Have you ever saved all those empty bottles for a month? Depending on your consumption it can add up to a lot of plastic trash. It is quite eye-opening when you see how much it is. And then what? Where does all of this trash go?

Recycling is definitely better than simply throwing empty bottles in the trash, but the system is far from perfect. Only 10-20 % of plastic bottles can be recycled. And even in the best circumstances recycling downgrades the quality of plastic and can therefore only be done about 1-2 times before it ends up in the landfill where it pollutes our environment. Aluminum or glass, on the other hand, can be recycled indefinitely. The best way to combat the negative effects of plastic on our environment is to avoid using it in the first place and to reuse other materials as much as possible.

What are Plaine Products?

That’s why I was thrilled to find Plaine Products. I was instantly excited about their concept of using aluminum bottles that can be returned, be sterilized, refilled and reused.

Plaine Products is a family-owned business with the mission to solve the plastic problem. You can tell that they are very thoughtful by considering all possible aspects of running a sustainable business, from the packaging to the sourcing, always thriving to improve their sustainability efforts. You can read more about it here. The business model Plaine Products is using is called a circular economy, which mimics the way our ecosystem is working.

Currently, they offer shampoo, conditioner, hand wash, body wash, body lotion, face moisturizer, and face wash in two different scents. Rosemary mint vanilla and citrus lavender. Regular bottles are 16 oz but they also offer travel size bottles.

The ingredients used in their personal care products come straight from Mother Nature, are chemical-free, non-toxic, vegan, cruelty-free, non-GMO and biodegradable. They are also free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates and palm oil.

How does it work?

You can purchase Plaine Products either directly on their website or in person through a retailer such as Package Free Shop in Brooklyn. You can look for retailers in your area using this link. Once you are done using your products you rinse the bottles and bring them back to the store or you can send them directly back to Plaine Products.

When you order online you get a free shipping label and can return your empty bottles using the same box. You can also ask to receive a free label even if you got your bottles from a store. Back at the facility, the bottles get cleaned and sterilized and are now ready to be refilled and reused. To make your life easier they offer subscriptions, so you never have to run out of product hassle-free.

For more convenience and to avoid wasting too much product you have the option to get a pump. The pump is however made of BPA-free plastic. So if you want to avoid all plastic you can simply choose to not receive the pump. The pump is meant to last for a very long time and to be reused for all future bottles.

My experience with Plaine Products

Up until I found Plaine Products I really struggled to find good plastic free products for my hair and lotions that I liked. I have tried everything from making my own to using shampoo bars. While that is worth exploring, can be a fun activity and works for some, it was not for me. At least in the long run. My curly hair became more and more frizzy and I really missed the smell and feel of using regular shampoo and conditioner. The same thing happened with body lotion.

I have been using Plain Products shampoo, conditioner and body lotion for about 7 months now and I love them so much. Not only are they the most sustainable bottled product that I can find on the market right now, but the ingredients also are on point and they work and smell good. Which let’s be honest, the latter two are kind of hard to find.

What excites me most about this company is that I don’t have to choose between what’s best for my health and what is best for the environment. I have often been in the predicament having to choose between a non-toxic or sustainable product. And on top of that, I don’t have to sacrifice the look, feel or smell of my hair and lotions.

And last but not least their customer service is on point! I spoke to Lindsey one of the co-founders a couple of times and she took her time to answer all of my questions promptly.

You might ask yourself wow that all sounds great but how much is it? So obviously this is not your cheap $7 shampoo. Quality and sustainability do come with a cost. When I bought the conditioner the first time I was excited but also thought that it was expensive. The bottle costs $30. I am aware that this is a stretch for some but bear with me for a moment.

First of all, the bottle is 16 oz. compared to the standard 12 oz. bottle and it is filled to the top. It takes my husband and I 2-3 month to go through 1 shampoo bottle together. Which when you do the math equals $5-$7.50 per person per month. Not bad right? I have used the same body lotion for the last 7 month and I am just now running out. Since the products are of high quality you definitely use less. Of course, all of this depends on your consumption but I have noticed that our spending on personal care products has actually decreased since we have been using more zero waste products. Even though some of the products are initially a lot more expensive. So don’t be put off by price tags. Make sure you do the math for the long term.

To sum it all up I am a huge fan of these products. I don’t take recommending products lightly and find it very difficult to work with brands because healthy ingredients and sustainability are both very important to me. Plaine Products is one of those few companies that checks both boxes, I am a happy customer myself and that is why I chose to become an affiliate.
